The late great comedian Bill Hicks once said that rather than using all of this amazing technology for targeting bombs why don’t we just use it for shooting food at hungry people? Well it seems that* that is exactly what Dominoes Pizza is about to start doing. The New Zealand branch of the company has conducted a demonstration delivery. According to Zerohedge.com , Domino’s Chief Executive Officer Don Meij said in a statement „we’ve always said that it doesn’t make sense to have a 2-tonne machine delivering a 2-kilogram order.“
*The double use of ‘that’ is correct: ‘It seems that…..that is what….’
The late great (someone): A great (usually famous) person who is now dead.
Example: As the late great author Earl Nightingale once said “Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal.”
To target: To aim something at a specific destination.
Example: This computer is used for targeting the weapons.
Dominos are not the first company to consider using Drone technology for something other than blowing things up. Amazon.com have also been eyeing this technology for a while and 7Eleven have even conducted a ‘test delivery’. It would seem that the technology is more than capable of making the deliveries but that it is more of a legal case. At present drones are restricted from flying in many built up areas.
To consider (something) : To think about maybe doing something.
Example: I was considering going there, but after the terrorist attack I don’t think I will.
Other than…: Except from this thing. This thing and….
Example: A) Other than the guitar, what instruments can you play?
- B) Well, other than the guitar, I can play the piano and the drums.
As is usually the case with these things there will be a loser. While company profits will undoubtedly go ‘sky high’ (excuse the pun), many minimum wage jobs will be lost. This is similar to the ‘self-service’ checkouts that were introduced into supermarkets recently. They have effectively cut out the middle-man so there are less ‘starter’ jobs for young people.
Excuse the pun: A ‘pun’ is a silly joke. This phrase is used when you make a silly joke. For example, the profits will go ‘sky high’ (very high) and drones can also fly very high.
Example: Excuse the pun, but aren’t you board* of working in that wood factory?
*Bored: not fun.
Board: A flat piece of wood.
Minimum wage: The lowest amount you can get paid for working. This is set by the government.
Example: The minimum wage is £7 an hour.
